NO... Thanksgiving Shopping!

I didn't steal this article. I'm just helping to spread it around....

Kansas City, Missouri (CNN) -- Big-box stores are stealing Thanksgiving, and their workers aren't happy about it. After Target decreed that Black Friday would start at midnight Thanksgiving night and that employees must report to work at 11 p.m., an Omaha worker, Anthony Hardwick, posted a petition at Change.org asking the company to move the official start of Christmas shopping back to 5 a.m. Friday. Response from workers and others has been stellar: 192,000 signatures by Monday.

Best Buy will also be opening at midnight, so Rick Melaragni, a Tampa employee, posted a similar petition. It currently has 14,000 signatures.

Why did this hit such a nerve? Hardwick's petition says, "A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation -- all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night's rest on Thanksgiving!" But he will have to cut out on the family to grab some sleep, because he'll be up all night working. Melaragni told The Huffington Post that Best Buy will be showing a Harry Potter movie to customers camped outside, so some employees will have to report to work by 8 p.m. to set up.

Walmart is the leader in this year's great race to gobble up employee turkey time. It announced its opening at 10 p.m. Thursday. Since two-thirds of Walmart's hourly workers are women, many will arrive exhausted after cooking the family feast.

Americans already work longer hours than in most countries, and as incomes shrink, lots of low-wage workers have multiple jobs. Many families' work schedules make it impossible to have weekends or even dinner together. That's why holidays provide the only opportunity for so many extended families to see each other. Our current obsession with corporate values, however, leaves no space for human values anymore. The just-in-time workforce means just no time for the family.

If these workers had unions, companies would have had to negotiate these schedule changes and a lot else too, but the retail giants hate unions worse than missing Black Friday. Just last summer, Target workers in Long Island tried unsuccessfully to get a union. Their last pay increase amounted to eight cents, according to the union. Target did all it could to get the no vote, including a veiled threat to close the store.

It's Walmart that sets the pace in union busting. One former employee told me that when Walmart found out he was trying to organize at his store in Texas, it assigned him his own personal supervisor, who stuck to him like glue.

A January 2011 report by Nelson Lichtenstein and Erin Johanson found that Walmart is also the leader in driving down wages and working conditions for the nation's 14.4 million retail workers. The median hourly retail wage is $10.58, which is considerably less than the median for all workers of $15.95. Without unions, workers have no leverage to get raises or even livable schedules.

But retailers say they can't help it. Shoppers are the ones demanding that workers sacrifice Thanksgiving. A Target spokeswoman says, "We have heard from our guests that they want to shop Target following their Thanksgiving celebrations rather than only having the option of getting up in the middle of the night." You'd think these box-full-of-billions retailers are just little mom-and-pop corner stores at the mercy of shoppers' whims when in fact the biggest eight of them control 85% of the general merchandise market.

A National Retail Federation representative says shoppers will "dedicate themselves manically to finding the best deal." Pitting shoppers against workers is much easier than looking into why shoppers sometimes act like mobs or why workers want some voice in their work lives. In fact, big-box shoppers and workers have a lot in common. Most are barely getting by.

A recent study of Walmart found that 28% of sales are to people making less than 200% of the federal poverty line ($44,100 in 2010 for a family of four) . Meanwhile, 22% of Walmart workers make less than $9 an hour, and 64% make less than $12. While some Black Friday shoppers may indeed be fixated on the cheapest new Nintendo game system, even more have to stretch their slim paychecks just to buy necessities for the family plus an occasional toy.

There are solutions. One retail employee, commenting at the Best Buy petition site, suggested that the company take out an ad and say it's giving Thanksgiving back, but it'll be open Friday and all weekend with great deals. Simple. Show some leadership, appeal to something besides greed and reverse the trend.

That study of Walmart showed that raising workers' minimum wage to $12 would have minimum impact on prices, even if Walmart passes all its increased costs on to consumers. It suggested that cities set minimum wages and standards for big-box stores. Some communities are passing community benefits agreements to set standards for big-box stores.

To get these things, and also long-overdue labor law reform, we need more workers willing to stand up like petitioners Hardwick and Melaragni and the Long Island Target workers, and we need consumers to recognize that they're workers, too, and that paying the lowest prices has a hidden cost for their children and our society. That cost is less opportunity for good jobs, more job offshoring and an ever-declining standard of living.

Do your part and DON'T part... with a buck on Thanksgiving Day. Just stay home, where you belong, with family and/or friends and give 'em the joy of sharing your company. Or, in some cases, simply add to their misery. And help bring our retail brethren home to their own families for future holidays.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

We did it! We made it forty (40) years together. Phew! I wanna thank my wife, my parents, our children, our sponsors, the Academy..., and all those people who didn't tell my wife to dump me, on any of those occasions when she probably should have....

I've tried to be a good husband; I've not been the best, but I really have tried and she stuck with me, ignored my foibles, refused to argue with me and attempted to make me a better person. And I've got to think that the secret to a long marriage, is having at least one of the partners putting in a lot of overtime, making the relationship work... in spite of the other partner, maybe not always being the best of the best.

Canvas Prints

The picture below, is a sample of one of the photos I shot on our recent road trip thru part of North Carolina and is of an old barn with some dairy cattle we came across, early in the morning... a rainy, foggy morning, as it were.

I chose to try a canvas print service, to see how it would come out. I am more than satisfied with the results. The finished product is a 16" x 20" copy of my original photo and it is printed directly on the canvas and even wraps around the top, bottom & sides, to a depth of about 1 & 1/2", adding to the realism.

There seems to be more than one company that offers this service, but the one I chose came highly recommended and, if you want more information, you can check 'em out at CanvasOnDemand. I've got lots of photos I'd like to have mounted this way, but it's not exactly cheap. But, I'm gonna try a couple more; I just can't resist the temptation.

Remembering Julie Adams

How many of you guys out there, remember growing up with fond memories of Julie Adams in that white bathing suit, as she was chased across the "Black Lagoon" by that green, scaly aqua-monster? I sure do! And, even though that was waaaaay back in 1954 and I was only eight (8) years old, Julie Adams has lived on in my memory banks all these years.

Well, she's never really gone away and now, she's just released a new book of personal reflections, as well as an assortment of color and/or black & white photos (autographed or not: your choice), and a CD that has fourteen (14) tracks from "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" movie. The book, titled "The Lucky Southern Star: Reflections From The Black Lagoon", as sort of a bonus, is filled with photos.

And, if you're like me and want to see more of Julie Adams and/or pick up on some of the merchandise she has available to fans, head on over to the official Julie Adams website.

"GO, PACK, GO!"

My son (the Aaron Rodgers lookalike...) and I got to make our most recent pilgrimage to hallowed Lambeau Field, in Green Bay, Wisconsin last night and we watched our Green Bay Packers thoroughly whip the visiting Minnesota Vikings, 45 to 7. It was an enjoyable evening, made even better by the night's theme being a salute to our country's military personnel & veterans of all branches of our Armed Forces.

The weather was pretty nice for this time of the year and there were just a few drops of rain before the game; lasted about five minutes or less and the sprinkles were replaced by a pretty cloudless sky with a partial moon and some stars. The temps stayed in the 30s. Quite tolerable for the often 'Frozen Tundra'.

Our seats were right on the 40-yard line, 55 rows up from the field. Easily, the best in-person seats we've ever had for a football game. I envy the guy who actually owns those seats.

Yep. A really pleasant night, all around.

Busy! Busy!

For this military veteran, it's been a busy couple of days. And it started off on Thursday morning, when our county held a brief ceremony honoring all military veterans, both the living and the deceased, at a morning gathering which included a salute to our nation's flag, a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance (under God...), a video presentation, the awarding of certificates & United States Flag lapel pins to veterans present and refreshments. They also played "Taps". I dedicated my own certificate & pin to those of my fellow vets who never returned from their final duty stations. It was a nice tribute, but I had to leave before the refreshments; just too many memories for me.

The ceremony was especially meaningful, as they'd chosen to have it on the 236th birthday of my United States Marine Corps. I liked that.

I also received really thoughtful personal greetings in the mail, from a couple of great friends who've I've known for about twenty-nine (29) years now.

And, I got a really swell card from my own sister, who never forgets me. When I was in the Marines, she was just a kid and she was... and is, simply the best.

I really want to thank, on behalf of military veterans everywhere in this country, the restaurants and other organizations that put forth a special gesture, by offering FREE meals and other services... to vets and active duty personnel. Their support is just amazing!

I managed to squeeze in lunch at Olive Garden, dinner at Chili's and even a free car wash. I may even head on over to Golden Corral this coming Monday, when they offer their FREE buffet. I'm glad they wait a couple days; after all, how much can a guy eat... even a Marine?

And these companies are not the only ones showing their appreciation; there are many, many others. In fact, it seems like the list gets longer each year. I salute them all.

Book Idea

I have a story idea for Stephen King. It came to me today, while I wasted 3 & 1/2 hours of my time, online, trying to order an autographed copy of his newest novel: "11/22/63", which was supposedly being released by Simon & Schuster. I say, 'supposedly', because repeated efforts to follow their links were only met with frustration and anger, as were my three telephone calls to what they call 'Customer Service'..., in this case, another joke.

I actually did make it thru their maze of links and twice I made it as far as their 'Checkout' buttons, only to be tossed off their site. The third time, I actually got a bit farther and was able to input my personal information, before being, again, tossed off.

Subsequently, a notice appeared on King's website, notifying would-be buyers that the sale had been halted and would be resumed on Thursday morning. Yeah, right. That ought to prove fruitful.

Update:

And finally, an even newer notice, including an email apparently overrode that first notice and Simon & Schuster has decided to raffle off the remaining books to anyone who signs up thru mid-afternoon on Friday. Sounds fair enough... except to people like me who actually did get thru during the initial offering and made it as far as the checkout. I had already become eligible for a book; what are my chances now? Assholes!

Anyhow, my story idea revolves around a guy who tries to make an online purchase, only to met by frustration and a complete lack of customer service. The guy wastes several hours trying to achieve his goal and finally, driven to the brink of insanity, goes off the deep end and metes out his own brand of justice to the company he feels has wronged him and the company's employees who are totally unsympathetic to his wasted time and efforts....

Color a BIG, A on my chest today as I am... once again, assuming the persona of Angry Man. Oh, sure, there are plenty of things in life we can be happy with. But, right now, I'm digesting the news that Smokin' Joe Frazier, former heavyweight boxing champion has liver cancer. And if that's not bad enough, it's also been reported that singer Andy Williams has bladder cancer. When will this insidious disease stop robbing us of so many of our own?

And why, do we let our politicians continue to fund a neverending torrent of money into senseless wars and pet projects that make them and their pals rich, while we continue to die at the hands of this disease? We should be putting these guys in prison for misappropriating our money!

Another thing... of much less importance, but also irritating as hell to me, is the news that Lindsay fucking Lohan reported to jail again, yesterday... and was let out... 4 & 1/2 fucking hours later! She was supposed to be incarcerated for at least thirty (30) days, this time. Who runs that asylum on our west coast?

On the other hand, looking for a bright spot, I got to watch my Green Bay Packers hold on in San Diego yesterday, as they continued their perfect first half of the season, by beating the Chargers.

I don't really expect them to wind up with an unbeaten season, but I cherish every victory and I can only hope their last win this season will be in the Super Bowl.

FALL BACK!

Hey! If you live in a large portion of the United States, where we still do many things I consider to be 'stoopid'... don't forget to set your clocks back an hour today, or you may be early for lots of things you've got scheduled.

At The Spa

Well, it's been a little over two months since we took Wyatt to the pet center, to have his nails trimmed, as well as getting his hair cut. So, we made an appointment for him to go yesterday morning. And this time, we also decided to take Quigley Irwin Wiggly in for pretty much the same treatment. Quigley has always gotten his nails trimmed on a regular basis, but this time, we decided to have him bathed and get the special 'furminator' treatment, to help with the shedding that he's been doing for about the past four months. The results are what you see below and I think we all got our money's worth.

I've been posting pictures of Quigley for years now, and this seems to be his favorite pose. He is a very laid-back dog. And for those of you who may be new here, Quigley is just over six years old and is primarily a Siberian Husky with Chinese Sharpei and Chow Chow as his next major ingredients. Somewhere along the line, he even picked up a little bit of Dalmation. You'll have to take my word for it, but his coat is soft enough to make a person think he's petting a cat.

Wyatt, on the other hand, is a little over a year old and his coat is coarse. The little guy weighs in at just under thirteen (13) pounds and is a good example of what you get when you mix a Pug with a Yorkshire Terrier. He is also, the complete opposite of his larger pal, as he is a little ball of fire, always on the move and ever-wanting attention. His little tiger's heart beats a mile-a-minute and he is constantly underfoot and wants to be included in every movement around him.

We jokingly refer to the two dogs' visits to the nail-trimming/grooming parlor as trips to the 'spa'. Both of our guys love the treatment and the attention they get. Included are also ear-cleanings and they get their anal glands expressed, as well. I wonder if I need my own anal glands looked after?

Artist's Integrity

Today may well be the last time I have any of my photos placed in our newspaper. Once again, in today's edition, they chose to run one of my color photos ("Monster Mash")... in black & white, destroying the integrity of the photo (in my opinion). Some photos should be run in color and some can be run in black & white. In fact, I've sent 'em black & white ones, in the past, because color was not necessary for those to make their point.

I cancelled my home subscription this morning, as I am really angry. I'm sure my monthly ten bucks won't mean anything to the newspaper's bottom line, but it makes me feel better.

Maybe I'm wrong. If you think so, feel free to tell me. The newspaper states that all submitted photos become their property and they are free to print 'em and/or sell 'em, if anyone wants copies. I've never cared about that; I only wanted to share what I see when I'm roaming around out there.

I may be placing too much importance on artist's integrity, but I just don't think so. You be the judge.

FREE Stuff!

The "entitlement psychology" of many Americans not only affects our pocketbooks, it may truly be the downfall of our way of life. It's time to do something about this!!!

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff, can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff,

And,

The folks who are paying for the free stuff, want the free stuff to stop.and the the folks who are getting the free stuff,want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... The people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff,have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff,that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... the people who are GETTING the free stuff, have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff, by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this. All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 231 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that in 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

My Thoughts As Well...

We ought to make this guy a write-in for President!!!!

This was in the Waco Tribune Herald, Waco, TX:

Put me in charge . . .

Put me in charge of food stamps. I'd get rid of Lone Star cards; no cash for Ding Dongs or Ho Ho's, just money for 50-pound bags of rice and beans, blocks of cheese and all the powdered milk you can haul away. If you want steak and frozen pizza, then get a job.

Put me in charge of Medicaid. The first thing I'd do is to get women Norplant birth control implants or tubal-ligations. Then, we'll test recipients for drugs, alcohol, and nicotine and document all tattoos and piercings. If you want to reproduce or use drugs, alcohol, smoke or get tats and piercings, then get a job.

Put me in charge of government housing. Ever live in a military barracks? You will maintain our property in a clean and good state of repair. Your "home" will be subject to inspections anytime and possessions will be inventoried. If you want a plasma TV or Xbox 360, then get a job and your own place.

In addition, you will either present a check stub from a job each week or you will report to a "government" job. It may be cleaning the roadways of trash, painting and repairing public housing, whatever we find for you. We will sell your 22 inch rims and low profile tires and your blasting stereo and speakers and put that money toward the “common good..”

Before you write that I've violated someone's rights, realize that all of the above is voluntary. If you want our money, accept our rules.. Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

If we are expected to pay for other people's mistakes we should at least attempt to make them learn from their bad choices. The current system rewards them for continuing to make bad choices.

AND While you are on Gov’t subsistence, you no longer can VOTE! Yes that is correct. For you to vote would be a conflict of interest. You will voluntarily remove yourself from voting while you are receiving a Gov’t welfare check. If you want to vote, then get a job.

Now, if you have the guts - SHARE IT, or PASS IT ON...

Bite Me!

To think, I came back on here and the only thing I've got to report, is that we went to the movies today, with our daughter and saw a horror movie in 3D. And, I've got to say that it was pretty interesting. Didn't require any thinking; Didn't have any hidden message that I could detect. Just some good, gory fun. Several characters got killed off; the CGI wasn't bad and the underwater 3D scenes were done well. I'm glad we went. Oh! The movie was "Shark Night 3D".

Strange. That's pretty much what I thought when I saw "Piranha 3D".

I guess I'd have to say that 3D movies have come a long way, since I was a kid and saw Vincent Price in "House of Wax", my very first 3D movie.

MILESTONE!

Well, I actually, officially... have arrived at "Old Age". No more needing to pretend that I'm a full-fledged Senior Citizen, so that I can get a little discount at my local movie theatres, fast food joints, etc. I can now walk into any public establishment, grovel a bit and be prepared to flash my Medicare card, or other suitable ID and let the pimplyfaced kid behind the counter struggle to find the golden key on the cash register's keyboard... the one that will give me 10 or even 15% off my meager purchase. Uh, that's assuming... he/she is bright enough to handle that, before the manager has to be called, to handle that all-important, often difficult task. Something I've observed during the past ten years that I've been practicing for this BIG day.

I've now made it farther than all but one of my male relatives on my birth-father's side of our family ever did... and he is now gone, as well. But I've got lots of years of catching up to do, if I want to equal... or top the sole remaining male relation on my mother's. I don't seriously expect to be around that long; I've got a helluva lot more wrong with me (physically), than that gentleman. But, it's okay. I just want to go out painlessly, when I make that journey to whatever lies ahead.

In the meantime, whenever you stumble onto this blog... this post, it will be here and you'll know that I did make it this far and that I have some regrets, some things I wish I could change, but that I have also managed some achievements and there are some things I'm proud of. On the "regret" side, among other things, I regret not being taller. I also regret not being skinnier. I won't dwell on the rest. On the other side, I'm proud of the woman who married me (the second time around); it's been almost forty (40) years now. And I'm also extremely proud of the two kids I had part of being a father to... one of whom is shown with me, a little farther down in this post. The other child (man) still lives too far away and couldn't be with us, when the pictures were taken, this past Father's Day.

I guess I've wasted enough space on this memorial to my longevity, except to note that my son sent me the first birthday (email) greeting and my wife was the first to wish me a "Happy Birthday!" in person. No doubt, my daughter will be among my well-wishers and I've already gotten cards from my stepdad and my sister. If there are no more, I am okay with that.

Today is the 67th anniversary of D-Day ("The Longest Day"): the day Allied Forces stormed the beaches at Normandy (France), etc., and began the big push that led to Hitler's eventual demise and the end of World War II.

And, I'm sorry to have to blog that Quigley Irwin Wiggly lost his bid to become April's "TOP DOG!" I hate to say it, but I think the counting was faulty, as the numbers I followed every day for the entire month, showed clearly, that Quigley was ahead of the pack. The very last night, he had over one hundred more votes than his nearest competitor. I just don't understand the results and I have asked for a clarification.

TOP DOG!

Today marks the 20th day in April, 2011. It also marks the 20th day that Quigley Irwin Wiggly's TV promo has been airing on WCIU "The U", as well as online and people can vote for him as the TV station's "TOP DOG" for April. And I hope that at least some of you... will click on TOP DOG and give Quigley your vote. As far as I know, you can only vote once each day, but you can vote every day in April. So, please, for Quigley's sake, vote early & vote often!

No "Green Thing"

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.”

That’s right, they didn’t have the green thing in her day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But they didn’t have the green thing back her day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she’s right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not Styro foam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus, instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad that they didn't have the green thing back then?

Quick Week

Yesterday ended a quick week for us. Our son caught a couple of planes and flew in from the West Coast, spent time with us all week... off and on and we took him to O'Hare Field late yesterday morning. Now, he's in New Mexico for about a week... for refresher-training and then he heads back to his own home. It was really a "quick week". Always too few and far between and goes too fast while it's here....

Trespassing!

I'm not quite sure what happened this morning, but we had a Spring Snow that started late last night and was supposed to continue into late this morning, but seemed to have stopped around 8:00AM. Forecasters promised us anywhere from 1" to 3" of slushy, white stuff; I think we only got a little more than the 1", but some of it came down as rain.

Anyhow, while I was busy working on Quigley Irwin Wiggly's campaign for April's "TOP DOG!", my wife scurried off with one of my cameras and took Quigley into the yard, figuring on a brief photo op. As expected... by me, at least, he answered with a quick squirt, a quick dump and was back at the door before the camera shutter could be snapped. So, my wife simply took a few pics out back and then, out front. She even managed to catch a mourning dove, who was more cooperative than the goofy dog. The pictures below, are the result of her efforts.

All, fine & dandy, except, what's with snatching my camera? I mean... do I go near her washer or dryer? C'mon, there have to be boundaries, right? Otherwise, we'd have anarchy.

Gone To Milwaukee

I took a little ride to Milwaukee, Wisconsin the other day and had some time to kill, so I drove around the downtown area and snapped a few pictures of some of the architecture, etc. I wish I'd had more time to spare and that the weather was nicer. It was really gray, quite windy, pretty chilly and there was intermittent drizzle: all in all, not conducive to shooting photos, but at least it kept the traffic and pedestrians to a minimum. I kinda felt like I had the world to myself---and I really liked that feeling.

Gone Celtic

I've taken pictures of this replica of an old Celtic cross before. It's easy, since the cross sits in our backyard: a... because I like it and b... because I hope it spooks our neighbors.... But, our daughter mentioned that she thought it would look good in black & white and/or sepia. So, I did shoot a few pics each way, as I agree with her thoughts on that. I may have done it before; seems familiar, but here are the latest results.

Did you see that Diane Sawyer has a special report coming up this week?
They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA.

There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally.

During the special they are going to show truckloads of items - USA made - being brought into replace everything and will be talking about how to find these items and the difference in price etc.

It was interesting that Diane said that if every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA made items this year, it would create something like 200,000 new jobs!

I WAS BUYING FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT WALMART and ON THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS IT SAID
'FROM CHINA'. FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF THE MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN 'FROM CHINA'.

I WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIF.

Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is it that we just do not think, while the Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets?

70% of Americans believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended.

Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges? DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA!!

Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong), simply choose another product, or none at all.

You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.

Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just one example. The point is, do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.

THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!

One month of trading losses will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.

START NOW TODAY -

Send this to everybody you know. Let's show them that we are Americans and NOBODY can take us for granted.

If we can't live without cheap Chinese goods for one month out of our lives, WE DESERVE WHAT WE GET!

Break Time

I took a little time off from running Quigley's campaign yesterday and rode around southern Wisconsin. It was late in the afternoon and the sun was going down, so I didn't really take much time out for picture-taking. These were all I did shoot...

We were cruising around one small town and came across a street where treetrimmers had gone thru, cutting, chopping, pruning and whatever. They left wood chips in their wake. rather indiscriminately, I'd say. Apparently, one guy wasn't interested in moving his car, so the trimmers just cut away, without axing the guy's permission...

I also happened upon this old railroad semaphore signal. You don't see many of these anymore...

Next up, was a quaint little bar/restaurant, pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

Busy, Busy

I can't believe how busy I am, trying to run Quigley Irwin Wiggly's campaign for "TOP DOG!" I have to keep answering his emails, FACEBOOK comments, "friend" requests, etc. And today is only April 4th; this is gonna keep up thru the last day of this month. The reward? He could be selected WCIU The U TV's "TOP DOG!" for the month of April. His prize, besides the notoriety: frankly, I don't know. I think Quigley would also be awarded a basket of dog "goodies" from the sponsor of the monthly contest. That would be nice... for Quigley. My satisfaction comes with seeing his video online and on TV (I've only come across the TV version once, so far. My wife has seen it two & a half times.) My other sense of satisfaction has already come, with seeing him go from just being a shelter dog that his previous owners simply discarded, to having people see him and give him some recognition and love. That does it for me.

Another Dumbass

The other day, I received another one of those scam emails; I must be on a list. Anyhow, just feeling like playing around, I emailed the asshole who sent it and asked him to verify my surname. (Hint:) It is NOT "Chieftain". Here is the reply:

Dear Mohawk Chieftain,

As per your request the above given name is my late client surname which happens to be your surname also. My late client full name is “Bradford Chieftain,” He died five years ago in a boat catastrophe.

First, I want to thank you for your prompt response to my email, I really do appreciate your kind of gesture towards this matter and your positive deposition to assisting me. Dolls

Just outside of Nashville we came across a tiny dollhouse. It was an old store that specializes in dolls and what first attracted me to stop & look in the windows was the black doll in the white wedding (?) dress. Immediately, I thought of a voodoo witch queen; I don't know why. She was enchanting. And, I had to take a few pictures of her and a couple of her companions in the other windows. I wish I could have gotten a clearer shot of the black "witch" as I saw her, but the reflections were just too prevalent. In case anyone is interested, these dolls stand about two & a half feet high each.

Among the interesting things we came across while visiting Centennial Park, located in the West End area of Nashville, TN are the subjects of most of the pics below...

A Brief History of #576

Engine #576 was built by the American Locomotive Company in August 1942, a class J-3, builder #69786. Designed by C.M. Darden, the NC's Chief Mechanical Officer, The J3's were a technological marvel marvel of their day. The one piece cast frame and sealed roller bearings on the engine were revolutionary in reducing maintenance costs for the road. And the lateral motion devices on the lead driver set allowed a much larger, and more powerful, engine to be used on the NC's tight curves.

The Whyte system classification for steam engines calls #576 a 4-8-4. Four wheels on the leading trucks, eight drivers, and four wheels on the trailing truck. Most railroads called their 4-8-4s "Northerns" after the Northern Pacific Railroad, who first adopted the design. However, the NC&StL went to and from Dixieland, so no "Northerns" would be welcome on the line. Instead, the 4-8-4s were called "Dixies." In practice, the crews called the engines "Yellow Jackets" or "Stripes."

As delivered, the 576 had a streamlined nose and wide skirts. However, during the Second World War, shop crews cut off the streamlining to make servicing the engine faster and easier

When the engines were streamlined, the crews called them "Yellow Jackets" for the broad yellow stripe on their sides. When the wide stripe was removed after the skirts were gone, they were called "Stripes" for the thin line of paint that replaced the wide stripe.

After the traffic surge died down from the Second World War, and traffic died down, the J3's were bumped from prime service spots to lesser passenger and freight trains. Eventually, by September 2 1952, all of the J3's were withdrawn from service. All of them except #576 were scrapped. The only surviving example of mainline NC&StL steam, J3-57 class locomotive #576 has been on static display in Centennial Park,

The F-86 Sabre Jet was the first swept-wing airplane in the U.S. fighter inventory. The F-86 scored consistent victories over Russian-built MiG fighters during the Korean War. Four models of the craft (F-86A, E, F and H) were day fighters or fighter bombers, while the F-86D, K and L versions were all-weather interceptors. George Welch became the first pilot to fly the plane at Mach 1 (the speed of sound) in routine flight. Although technically rated as subsonic, the Sabre is no stranger to supersonic speeds. Various models of the Sabre held world speed records for six consecutive years, setting five official records and winning several National Aircraft Show Bendix Trophies. In September 1948, an F-86A set the Sabre's first official world speed record of 570 mph. This mark was bettered in 1952 by an F-86D that flew at 698 mph. The "D" became the first model of a fighter to better its own record, in 1953, with a run of 715 mph. A very popular and durable aircraft more than 6,000 F-86s were manufactured in Los Angeles and Columbus, Ohio. U.S. production of the Sabre Jet ended in December 1956.

A Plaque located at the base of the aircraft has the following inscription.

“This F86L Sabre Jet was flown by the the Tennessee Air National Guard from 1957 – 1960 in support of the USAF Air Defense Command. After being retired from active service it was given to the City of Nashville. It was renovated and mounted in 1982 by the men of the Nashville Air National Guard Unit.”

Turnin' Back The Clock...

On the way down to Nashville, shortly after we crossed into Tennessee, from Kentucky, on Interstate 65, we came across the small town of Cross Plains and discovered an old drug store, complete with an antique lunch counter, soda fountain, wooden booths... a working pharmacy and lots more. It was terrific! The original drug store had burned down and had been rebuilt in... are you ready? 1915! What a treat! My sister and her family were on the road, at the same time as we and they met us there, for lunch. I have not posted their pics, as I hesitate to do that, without permission. I risk losing my head, just for posting my wife's pics on here; she's not crazy about going public. That's why you'll usually find only pictures of me and/or Quigley Irwin Wiggly... especially, now that he's flirting with stardom....

(Note:) The traffic signal you see in the exterior shots, is the only one in the whole town. What a way to live!

In Nashville

One of the places we visited in Nashville was "Cooter's". It's just north of the Opryland Hotel complex, almost directly across the street. Any fan of the old "Dukes of Hazzard" TV program will know who Cooter is.... Anyhow, the place is loaded with souvenirs & mementos of that TV program and the variety is so large that it really boggled my own mind; I can't believe how much money that particular franchise must have brought in... and still does. These few pics are only of the famous General Lee Dodge Charger and the town's tow truck. But inside the building, in the museum area, are Daisy Dukes' Jeep and one of the police squad cars, among sooooo much other stuff.

And, at the very back, a room is made up to honor the old SUN Studios, where the "Million Dollar Quartet" put together a jam session one remarkable night. Oh! For those who are not familiar with that, the Quartet consisted of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.

My wife was really not there to inspire them, but she inspired me to take a few pics...

I sure hate to lead off with sad news, but a just-breaking story reports that actress Elizabeth Taylor has passed away, at the age of seventy-nine, apparently, from congestive heart failure, which she had struggled with for quite some time. That is sad. She was often named "The most beautiful woman in the world", when she was younger. And she really was. Her violet eyes were really unique. I wrote her once and she actually replied, herself, sending me a brief note and an autographed black & white photo, signed with a ballpoint pen; not professionally printed. She was very gracious. Her portrayal of Cleopatra in the movie extravaganza of the same name was really memorable. Hollywood has lost a legend.

The three pictures here, are from my personal collection and are the result of a "fan" letter I wrote her, waaaaay back in 1984. Like I said, she was a "very gracious" lady...

UDOG-Ditions!

I'd intended to post some pics from last weekend's road trip today. But, yesterday we took Quigley Irwin Wiggly into Chicago, in response to an invitation from the TV station WCIU (The U), for him to be videotaped for one of their 10-second, on-air promos and a shot at being named "Top U Dog of the Month". The promos will appear soon and I will post a link on this blog, once I get it from The U.

In the meantime, here are some stills that our daughter and I shot (mostly our daughter...) And, prior to the taping, we were all surprised by a brief visit from Chicago TV personality Rich Koz who assumes the on-air role of horror movie host "Svengoolie", every Saturday night on WCIU (The U). We have met Rich Koz a couple of times in the past, at personal appearance events featuring him and this time he took a few minutes off from his work, when a staffer told him that our daughter had hoped to see his on-air set which, unfortunately, was temporarily stored away, not being needed for a short time.

Er... in this case, I have no idea; I did not see him. But, where was I, since last Friday? These sample pics may lead one to believe I, a "pillar of the community"... was in Greece---at the Parthenon. You'd be partially correct.

Or, maybe I spent time with Humpty Dumpty. Right again.

You'd also be correct in assuming I saw the "Million Dollar Quartet".

I also spent time at "Cooter's". Who?

That was before I visited a stopover once scouted by Lewis & Clark. Look 'em up... if you don't know who they were. I can't tell you guys everything.

And I think this is the first time I ever saw a red-eyed, white-billed American Coot. And I ain't Daffy, although I have met up with a lot of other old coots... in my day.

Ever pet a fish? I have, but in this case, I did not; I liked the sign, however.

I met my first long long haired Akita. I never even knew there was such a dog. I'd only ever seen the regular kind.

Movie & Lunch

Well, I didn't feel like sittin' on my butt, at home, yesterday. So, I took myself & my Mrs. to a movie... and sat on my butt, there. We took a chance on being surrounded by screaming little rugrats and went to see the latest Johnny Depp flick: "RANGO". It's a cute, animated western and, if you appreciate well-done, modern animated techniques, it's well worth shelling out a few bucks... especially if you go to a cheaper matinee, like we did.

There were mostly families with kids, in the theatre, but they stayed pretty quiet, so I guess they were entertained. The movie works quite well for adults as there are lots of hidden jokes and references that only adults are meant to pick up on. And, unlike too many kids' movies, there is not a lot of music to break up the flow of the movie (I've always hated that, even when I was a "little kid"). I'd recommend this movie, even if only for the visual treat.

After the flick, we stopped at a little restaurant we used to frequent, until it changed ownership and we were a bit surprised by the changes in the menu. I'd gone in there, figuring on maybe getting an Italian sausage sandwich, but I wound up with a Hobo Skillet, instead. It looked exactly like what you see here, except, instead of an orange slice, on the side, I had orange juice, in a glass.
And there was no muffin; I had a couple of slices of buttered wheat toast, instead.

My wife pretty much satisfied her seasonal craving for Corned Beef & Cabbage, by having a Stuffed Cabbage meal instead. The lunch filled us both and we only ate lightly, come suppertime.

Oh! In case you're wondering: a Hobo Skillet consists of mainly hash brown potatoes, ham, green peppers, mushrooms, melted cheese, onions and the things on top, in this case, are two eggs--- fried over easy. Mine looked like these and were not "easy" enough for my taste.

Survivors

I am one of those people who, quite frequently, watch CBS's "reality" TV series: "Survivor", and I got to thinking that the producers oughta set up a celebrity version. I think they could produce it in the Mideast and maybe call it "Survivor, Libya". I know I'd watch it for sure, especially if they could include guests like:

Charlie Sheen

Lindsay Lohan

Muammar Gadhafi (Gadaffi, Gaddafi, Gathafi, Kadafi, Kaddafi, Khadafy, Qadhafi, Qathafi: (Take your pick...)

Maybe even bring in Nick Nolte...

Another Survivor

I must be some kind of a sissy. I just watched (on TV) the Space Shuttle Discovery land at Cape Kennedy, at approximately 10:56 to 10:57AM Eastern Time and I couldn't help but get teary-eyed. It's the end of an era for NASA and for American space flight. Discovery was a real workhorse and was a lot luckier than two of our other shuttles: Columbia & Challenger. Today's successful ending to Discovery's history of flight was both triumphant... and sad.

Locked Up

Just the other day, my brother-in-law, while passing time on one of those large cruise ships, had the chance to pass thru the Panama Canal. He knows I like trains, so he sent me a few pics of the passage thru the Canal and the small locomotives that are utilized to help vessels navigate thru the locks. Interesting stuff and I figured I'd share. I've never been down that way. I wonder if people still have to take quinine, to ward off possible Malaria, from hungry mosquitoes?

Blue Bird Of Happiness

The Mayor of Phoenix was very worried about a plague of pigeons in his city.

He could not remove the pigeons and all of Phoenix was full of pigeon poop; the people of Phoenix could not walk on the sidewalks, or drive on the roads.

It was costing a fortune to keep the streets and sidewalks clean.

One day a man came to City Hall and offered the Mayor a proposition. 'I can rid your beautiful city of its plague of pigeons without any cost to the city. But, you must promise not to ask me any questions. Or, you can pay me one million dollars to ask one question.' The mayor considered the offer briefly and accepted the free proposition.

The next day the man climbed to the top of City Hall, opened his coat, and released a blue pigeon. The blue pigeon circled in the air and flew up into the bright blue Arizona sky. All the pigeons in Phoenix saw the blue pigeon and gathered up in the air behind the blue pigeon. The Phoenix pigeons followed the blue pigeon as she flew southward out of the city.

The next day the blue pigeon returned, completely alone, to the man atop City Hall.

The Mayor was very impressed. He felt the man and his blue pigeon had performed a wonderful and miraculous feat by ridding Phoenix of the plague of pigeons.

Even though the man with the pigeon had charged nothing, the mayor presented him with a check for 1 million dollars and told the man that, indeed, he did have a question to ask and even though they had agreed to no fee and the man had rid the city of pigeons, he decided to pay the 1 million just to get to ask ONE question.

The man accepted the money and told the mayor to ask his ONE question.

The mayor asked:

DVD-Day!

Well, if today is Tuesday, then that means the latest DVD releases will become available at stores. And this week's crop includes these two: which I'm gonna have to go out and bring home to the tipi.

Yep, I'm gonna relive the Packers' Super Bowl XLV victory over the Steelers and season one of the all-too-short zombie series that premiered on TV not so long ago. I wish they'd get season two up & running....

When people ask me why I ever decided to join the United States Marine Corps, I tell 'em I had several reasons. But, one of the reasons I don't think I ever even considered... was the neverending plethora of honors people continue to shower on the Corps and, inadvertently... me.

Jockeying For Position

A group of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, accompanied by two female teachers,
went on a field trip to the local racetrack, (Churchill Downs) to learn
about thoroughbred horses and the supporting industry (Bourbon), but mostly
to see the horses.

When it was time to take the children to the bathroom, it was decided that
the girls would go with one teacher and the boys would go with the other.
The teacher assigned to the boys was waiting outside the men's room when one
of the boys came out and told her that none of them could reach the urinal.

Having no choice, she went inside, helped the boys with their pants, and
began hoisting the little boys up one by one, holding on to their 'wee-wees'
to direct the flow away from their clothes.

As she lifted one, she couldn't help but notice that he was unusually
well-endowed. Trying not to show that she was staring the teacher said, 'You
must be in the 5th grade.'

'No, ma'am', he replied. 'I'm riding Silver Arrow in the seventh race, but I
appreciate your help.'

Kay Day

Anybody else remember actress Kay Lenz? Well, today is her fifty-eighth (58th) birthday and I just want to wish her a Happy Birthday! It seems like I haven't seen much of her in years, ever since she married David Cassidy. Actually, that union only lasted six years and she still appears on TV frequently. I guess I just don't watch the right programs.

Lean Cuisine

I got to thinking that... now that March is here, along with all that March Madness crap and St. Paddy's Day is right around the corner, I should be on the lookout for special cuisine. I'm only one quarter Irish and I've just never been able to warm up to corned beef & cabbage. Yech! But, I guess there are worse things one can find on one's plate. In fact, as a self-professed chef, my pal Cookie probably has recipes for all kinds of exotic dishes. I wonder if he's ever tried cooked spiders? He is a man of many tastes....

No "Plain Jane"

I'm sorry to lead off with a goodbye, but actress and former glamour girl Jane Russell was reported, yesterday, to have passed away from respiratory complications. She was eighty-nine (89). I remember first seeing her on the BIG SCREEN, back in the 1950s, when I was just a "little kid". I think the movie was an old Bob Hope comedy/western: "Son of Paleface", a sequel to their 1948 hit "Paleface", which I saw some years later. I remember thinking she was gorgeous. It would be several more years, before I finally got to see her in her sultry role in Howard Hughes' "The Outlaw". That (in those days) hot commodity was not suitable for impressionable, young Catholic boys like me and there was no way my mom was gonna let me see something like that... lest my morals be corrupted.

Here is Jane Russell in publicity stills from "The Outlaw" and paired with Marilyn Monroe. The two actresses had their prints enshrined in Hollywood's cement sidewalks, at the same time.

The last time I saw Jane Russell in a movie was when she appeared in a slatternly role in a 1967 biker flick: "The Born Losers". I used to really like that fairly crappy movie, but I'd rather forget how Jane Russell looked. I like to think it was merely makeup for the character she portrayed, and not a prelude to how we all turn out, when we get to a certain age.... I prefer the Jane I've chosen to blog today.

I'm just not in that group. And today's post is not meant to glorify her, although I've never been secretive about the fact that I still like her. After all, I was supposedly in Vietnam, fighting for "freedom" and that includes her right to be "free" to express her opinions, whether others thought they were right... or wrong. Instead, it's an homage to a movie that I've always found entertaining and a song, sung by Nat King Cole & Stubby Kaye, a pair of entertainers who deserve recognition.
